Eight Who Would Like To Be Great

Posted by Bill Cox on April 7th, 2009

american-idol-logoThe voters got it right last week as they sent Megan Joy on her whirlwind tour of news and talk shows as the latest American Idol reject. She got a chance to explain to Matt Lauer, Regis, Kelli, et al that Simon misunderstood her comment about not caring (she did care about the competition – just not about Simon’s comment) and she believed it was her time to go.

This week the next contestant to take the departure tour is not as obvious. As any of us ponder our favorites and least favorites, we are influenced by some combination of their singing ability and  how much we like them based on everything from our glimpses of their personalities to their appearances to our favorite movies.

Christopher and EA have proclaimed this the year of India after the much deserved success of Slumdog Millionaire. He’s a very likeable guy, but at this point I’d have to say that Anoop may now be the weakest in the singing department among the Elite Eight.  It’s hard to pull against a guy named Anoop, but Anoop is not the final answer in this millionaire competition. It’ll take a great performance tonight to take him to the next round.

We’ll use a lifeline to poll the audience. What do you think?

For the record, we never said Anoop would win. I just stated that it’s the year of India. Who’s to say who will jump in on the party: it could Anoop or it could be the Indian Football (Soccer) team in the South Asian Football Federation Cup.

  2. Just got in and getting a late start. Backed up the DVR so I’ll catch up soon.

  3. For the record, I never said that I thought Anoop would win. To avoid additional words being put in my mouth, I think that Adam or Allison will win it all.

  4. Danny has been one of my favorites since the beginning. I thought he got off to a bit of a rough start, but then finished OK. I didn’t like the arrangement of the song so it wasn’t one of his better performances for me. Still should hopefully be around for a long time.

  5. Chris and EA. I didn’t say you said Anoop would win. I went back and looked at your comments before writing the above and simply quoted you as saying it was the year of India. EA also said then that she didn’t think Anoop would win.

  6. After initially flying under it the first week or two, Kris is now definitely being picked up by radar. He’s a good singer, getting more comfortable and confident. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if I was a teenage girl I think I would be voting for him a lot.

  7. Blake Jordan

danny did a fantastic job on his song and in my opinion he’s got the show

  8. Solid performance by Lil, but she’s still not blowing me away and living up to what I expected from her after her first couple of weeks.

  9. Blake Jordan

    i totally agree bill

  10. Good to have you on board, Blake. A couple of our “regular” commenters are away from their TVs and computers right now and will catch up after the show is over.

  11. Blake Jordan

thanks ive kinda got it made with a tv near the computer….lol

  12. I think that might have been Anoop’s best yet. Good song choice and all-around very good performance. In this week’s opening blog I suggested Anoop might have to do something great to go to the next round. I think he just might have done it.

  13. So Scott plays guitar (a little), too. Who knew? Not his best performance, but I’m still very impressed. Was thinking a lot tonight about how much more difficult it must be to do what he’s doing without the benefit of sight. Even little things like not being able to see and play off of the audience. You don’t give him the title because he’s blind, but I’m amazed at what he’s doing. He’s not the best, but I’m a fan.

  14. Allison’s stock went up several weeks ago, dropped last week, and remained steady this week. Wasn’t bad, but performance didn’t do much for me one way or the other. I can see her in an old Mad Max movie with Mel Gibson.

  15. Judges seem to be more complimentary when they don’t have much time. They all loved Matt, but I didn’t care for the song choice. He did it OK and was better than last week, but still far from his best.

  16. What else can I say about Adam that I haven’t already said? Yet another style and another amazing performance. He’s already as good as many veteran performers. Once again, everybody else is competing for second best.

  17. My personal bottom three and who I think might be the actual bottom three is not the same. My three least favorites tonight were Lil, Matt, and Allison. I suspect the voter’s bottom three could include Scott. Danny was subpar for himself, but has overall been strong enough to be OK. I think we may be saying goodbye to Lil.

  18. So if you had to choose a song from the year you were born, what song would you have sung?

  19. Scott Christopher

anyone there? they were running late tongiht, i guess, and the DVR cut off and I didn’t get to see Adam’s performance…what did he sing? I wanna youtube it

  20. Kevin Nunnery

Just got in from another thrilling night at AE-the DVR is up and running-so here we go.

Danny Boy-kicking things off tonight. I’m not gonna lie-terrible start to the song. The arrangement kinda threw me off. But he brought it home down the stretch. Not one of his better performances-but Danny is still solid. He’ll be around next week. I think everyone has just figured on a Danny/Adam final. But we’ll see.

  21. Kevin Nunnery

Kris has come out of nowhere these past few weeks. He’s very likable-especially with the ladies. Tonight I do think he took a small step back. The past few weeks I thought he was one of the top 2 or 3 performers. Tonight-just kinda ehh. I like him-and I would really like to see him continue on in the competition.

And Simon just called himself a hottie. How humble of him.

  22. Kevin Nunnery

I love that Lil’s mom explained that Lil is actually her name. I was under the impression that it was her stage name.

Lil was better tonight. That being said, she was one of the seemingly “annointed ones” early on. But she is not living up to the expectations that we all had for her. So much so that Paula actually judged instead of just telling her she looked pretty and that she believed in her as a star. (the audience subsequently booed Paula-the only time I can remember that happening) I could see Lil being in danger this week.

  23. Kevin Nunnery

Anoop repping 1986-what a great year to be born!

Whether its the year of all things Indian or not-I dont know. I DO know that Anoop was on point tonight. My favorite performance of the night so far.

Also-just to have thrown my 2 cents into the whole “year of the Indian” thing. It may be-but they killed off the only Indian guy on House last night. Shocking-but a great ratings ploy.

  24. Kevin Nunnery

Scott jamming the guitar? I give him props for being brave and coming out swinging. I agree with Kara in that the power ballad is not what I think of when I think Scott. He came up short on some of the high notes-but he also had a few good moments. I still think that Scott is out of his depth against some of the other contestants. I could see him in the bottom 3 this week.

  25. Kevin Nunnery

Allison-better than last week. Less growly and screamy. But I’m taking a clear stance on Allison-I’m officially not a fan. Randy comparing her to Kelly Clarkson-no sir. She just doesn’t do it for me.

  26. Kevin Nunnery

Matt-I like that hat bro. And his performance was definately better than last weeks. The judges were making up ground there. Good-not great-but definately good. Probably good enough to make it through this week. the only problem is that with only 8 people left-”good” will likely land you a bottomw 3 stool.

  27. Kevin Nunnery

Fox-seriously? You have gotta be out of your minds to try to cram 8 performances into a one hour segment. Why not an hour and a half like last week? Then the judges could have actually given some feedback. Yes-I am bitter-I only set the DVR to record an extra 3 minutes instead of the 5 or 6 I would have needed to see Adam. Luckily-I found it online at this late hour.

Not much to be said really. Adam = American Idol. Period. If he doesn’t win I will be extremely shocked. Head and shoulders above the rest. To the point where even Darth Cowell gave him a standing O. Nice.

  28. Kevin Nunnery

    BOTTOM THREE

    My personal picks-Lil, Allison, Matt

What will in fact happen-Lil, Scott, Matt

Although Allison has dipped into the bottom three previously. Tough week to say goodbye to anyone. I think it’ll be Scott this week.

  29. Kevin Nunnery

Anyone else out there? I know Bill is at DBC-my old stomping ground-leading the revival services.

Anyone else tired of the obvious lip-synching?

And what a weird song selection for the group-I thought it sounded terrible.

  30. Kevin Nunnery

Adam-safe. Like it was ever a question.

Kris-safe over Anoop. I really enjoyed Anoop’s performance last night. It was my favorite after Adam’s. I hope that he makes it through.

  31. Kevin Nunnery

What’s up with some of the people American Idol is bringing in this season?

    Kanye West? Lady Gaga? Flo-Rida?

None of these individuals impressed me. I watch AI to enjoy the artistry. Not this.

And what’s up with Ryan eyeing the dancer girls? And then he just referred to them as Flo-Rida’s “harem.” Gotta guard your eyes when watching TV for sure-apparently this sometimes include AI.

  32. Just got in from doing the first of three Easter services at Dunean Baptist Church in Greenville, so I’m 30 minutes behind live watching the show. I’ve tightened up my window so that if anyone else is commenting live, I won’t see their comments – hopefully.

  33. Kevin Nunnery

    Danny-safe.

    Matt-safe.

Scott-to the bottom 3. He was definately not as good as Anoop last night.

And now it appears that one of the two remaining girls is heading to the bottom three. Allison is safe. Lil to the bottom three.

I’m ok with Lil or Scott leaving. Sorry Bill-I know you like Scott.

  34. It’s inspiring to see Scott in the choreographed numbers. He’s never even seen anybody on stage trying to look cool. A definite team effort. I will miss the uniqueness that he brings to the show whenever he leaves.I hope it’s not tonight, but it could be.

  35. Kevin Nunnery

Oh Kellie. I remember why you didn’t win now.

  36. Kevin Nunnery

Wow. Ryan finds even more messed up ways to tell us which contestant gets to head back to the couch. One of the bottom 2 deserves to be saved by the judges if he gets voted off tonight. Anoop DAWG!

  37. Kellie was a little pitchy, wasn’t she?

  38. Kevin Nunnery

A little pitchy? Randy-you’re kinder than I am sir.

  39. Well, I have to be kind to the NC native.

  40. I said coming into this week that Anoop could be in trouble if he didn’t step it up. I thought he stepped it up enough to not only stay around, but to stay out of bottom three. I was wrong about bottom three, but hope he makes it.

  41. I don’t think they will use their vote to save Scott. I didn’t get to see last nights show, but based on what Donna said, I think it is time for him to go.

  42. Kevin Nunnery

Well Scott is now singing for his American Idol life.

Hmm. Bout the same as last night. I don’t think they’ll save him. It’s his time.

  43. Was afraid that Scott would be in bottom three, but also hope he doesn’t go.

  44. Kevin Nunnery

2 say stay. 2 say go. But it has to be unianimous right?

I bet Paula wants to save him. And probably Kara.

  45. Kevin Nunnery

2 say stay. 2 say go. But it has to be unianimous right?

I bet Paula wants to save him. And probably Kara.

  46. Lil was my choice to depart, but I don’t think it will happen. Afraid it will be Scott or Anoop. They might save Lil, but I wouldn’t do it based on her singing of the past few weeks.

  47. Kevin Nunnery

Oops-I went twice there. My bad.

I think that its kinda messed up that when it comes down to the nitty gritty-the other 3 judges put it all on Simon. It’s like they’re all afraid to be the one who says no. Good for Simon being willing to take the hard stance. With great power comes great responsibility Paula, Kara, and Randy. Thank you Uncle Ben for your always applicable wisdom.

  48. Well time to watch Criminal Minds. Everyone have a great evening. Sorry I join the discussion late tonight.

  49. Kelly Pickler is having some pitch problems tonight. Maybe we could sub her into the bottom three.

  50. Lil safe. Not what I wanted, but what I expected.

  51. Bummer. I really like Scott. Come on judges. Save him.

  52. Boo. I will really miss Scott. It’s a singing competition and he’s not the absolute best singer among a very talented group. But if we’re talking about somebody that America should look up to, he’s the winner. I hope his career takes off.

  53. Kevin Nunnery

He has definately been that Bill. Sorry that you lost one of your favorites. I’m still stinging from the blow of losing Alexis. I feel your pain.
