Impacting

Posted by Josh Crocker on April 3rd, 2009

So last week I watched this tutorial about doing this thing called impacting in photoshop for black & white photography.  It’s surprisingly complicated as far as the fine details of what goes down to get the final product, but the basic idea is that it makes your whites whiter and darks darker, all the while making the overall image much clearer.

Makes it pop.  It’s kind of like when you’re interviewed for a newspaper and when they quote you the words are changed around to sound prettier (or fit column space).  The original idea is still there… but pronounced.  Intensified.

I think that’s a lot like life.

Sometimes it takes the darks getting darker to make the lights get lighter, and in the end it makes the overall picture slightly clearer than it was before.  The beauty can be seen… though perhaps only partially.

I’m waiting on the lights to get lighter so I can see the big picture.

This is the pretty version.

  1. There is also an image adjustment in photoshop called vibrance. It does basically the same thing and fits your illustration. We need to be vibrant in the world with the gospel.
