Best of the Decade: Songs
Posted by Michael Wright on November 27th, 2009
Alrighty, Here’s Pop-culture’s top songs of the decade!!! One song for each year (and with a slight bias towards Coldplay since they got on here twice).
2000
“Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down
I remember sitting down in an uncomfortable dentist chair as a terrified 10 year old. My mind began making up incredibly unrealistic situations that ultimately led to my demise. I lay motionless as the assistant put headphones over my ears to block out the sound of drilling. What do I hear?? “If I go crazy then will you still call me super man?” The dentist had to ask me to sit still more than once. Unfortunately, you can’t stop the head from nodding to good music.
2001
“Drops of Jupiter” by Train
I’m entirely indifferent about this one, but apparently Billboard Music thought this song was a big deal in 2001.
2002
“The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World
I’m pretty sure I had my birthday party at a skating rink in 2002 . . . and I’m pretty sure this song was on repeat.
2003
“Clocks” by Coldplay
Oh Coldplay. This is where I sit back and reflect on the past decade with the widest grin my face muscles can muster. When Coldplay’s “Clocks” reached my ears in 2003 I decided to spend the rest of my life learning every single song they ever produced and basically defending their musical genius from any and every Anti-Coldplay music critic out there. GO LISTEN.
2004
“Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot
Hey Look! It’s Switchfoot!
2005
“You and Me” by Lifehouse
I was sixteen. She was fifteen. Puppy love was in the air and “You and Me” by Lifehouse was holding us together. Then we broke up. Apparently there was better music out there that year.
2006
“How to Save a Life” by The Fray
I love songs that teach me how to do something.
2007
“Apologize” by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic
I’m really sorry to admit that this isn’t one of my favorites. But hey. It’s too late to apologize.
2008
“Viva la Vida” by Coldplay
There are no words . . .
2009
“Fireflies” by Owl City
This is one of the songs I listen to while taking long walks on the beach and driving through beautiful mountain landscapes. If I did stuff like that . . .
There you have it, World.

I completely affirm these choices. Good job.
Wow, this is by far the worst decade list I’ve seen.
lol great job on the constructive feedback, Ian. The important thing to note is that it’s the best songs of POP culture.
And I don’t know if Owl City can really be the top of 2009- I mean it hasn’t been accessed by pop culture until just recently. I don’t really have an alternative though…
And I forever wish Timbaland would no longer be associated with OneRepublic. And that they would get a new drummer.
But good list, sir. And I don’t know why, but “Bleeding Love” is stuck in my head now.
